A Letter to My Classmates free essay sample

Furthermore, the cloud shaped, where the title is printed on, suggests that religion will be involved in the story since cloud represents heaven. Moreover, the comment by NPR. org: â€Å"This could be one of the most important pieces of fiction since To Kill a Mockingbird†¦If you read only one book†¦ let this be it. † , made me draw my conclusion that the concept of The Help will be almost similar to To Kill a Mocking Bird. Although I only read the summary of To Kill A Mockingbird, I already love the story and because of NPR. org’s comment I have decided to read The Help. Like other books, readers usually read the blurb to get a description the book. The blurb in The Help provides an excellent overview of what the book is all about. As a result, the book caught my attention because the synopsis created an interesting atmosphere while I was reading it. Hence, I chose this book The Help, a fiction novel about colored maids during the 1960’s in Jackson, Mississippi, is narrated by the three main characters in the novel namely, Aibileen, Minny, and Skeeter. After Eugenia â€Å"Skeeter† Phelan finished her studies, she came back to Jackson, Mississippi to pursue her writing career. She suggests to Elaine Stein, editor of Harper Row, that she is planning to write a book about helps working for white family. Missus Stein agrees and tells Skeeter to interview a dozen maids. Skeeter also gets a job as an advice columnist about housework and relationships in the Miss Myrna section of the Jackson Journal. Hilly Holbrook’s, the antagonist and Skeeter’s life-long best friend, sets Skeeter and Stuart, son of a senator, on a date, but the relationship did not work. Despite being rejected by Aibileen, a colored maid who helps Skeeter answer the Miss Myrna column, many times to share her stories, Skeeter did not give up to convince Aibileen to help her with the book. Aibileen Clark, who is working in the Leefolt’s residence and taking care of two- year old Mae Mobley, who is ignored and abused by her mother, finally agrees to tell her experiences as a maid working for white families to Skeeter. The bitterness of her son’s death, the fear of Mae Mobley growing up to become like her mother and Ms. Hilly’s Home Help Sanitation Initiative, a bill that requires every white home to have a separate bathroom for the colored help (10), moves Aibileen to share story in the public regardless of the dangers she might face. Even though Skeeter’s friendship with Hilly and Elizabeth is ending, and racial issues in the country is heating up, Skeeter and Aibileen continued to collaborate to write the novel. Soon, Minny and other maids joined them. The book with a different setting called Niceville, Mississippi is published and becomes a bestseller. People in Mississippi, Jackson recognize themselves in the book and continue to guess who are the people involved in the novel. However, Miss Hilly keeps insisting that it is not from Jackson, Mississippi because she does not want other people to know that she is the white lady who ate the stool of Minny, her mother’s former maid. Minny and Aibileen, at the end of the novel, formed an extraordinary friendship with Skeeter. Skeeter who does not have white friends anymore and has been ostracized from the community is reluctant to accept the job offer in New York, but later accepts it with Aibileen and Minny’s assurance that they will be fine. Before leaving, Skeeter told that Aibileen, who was fired by Miss Elizabeth Leefolt because Miss Hilly framed her for stealing her silver service, will be the writer for the Miss Myrna Column. Minny, at the end of the novel, leaves her abusive husband and lives outside the town with her children, but near to the house of Miss Celia Foote’s, wife of Hilly’s ex-Boyfriend and Minny’s current white lady. When I was reading the book, I remember Jay Gatsby, from The Great Gatsby, who was not considered in the high-class society despite working hard to achieve his American dream. His character is the same as Celia Foote, Minny’s white employer. She tried everything, in order to be accepted in the society, but is not successful in doing so because of Hilly Holbrooks’ manipulation. Also, Minny’s decision of putting the Terrible Awful deed that she did to Ms. Hilly, in order to protect the other maids from being hurt, reminds me of the last part of The Hunger Games where Katniss Everdeen plans to commit suicide with Peeta Mellark, so that both of them could survive. Katniss knows that the game makers would have no choice, but to consider her and Peeta as victors of the Hunger Games than none, because the game makers and President Snow, the antagonist, will have a bad name in the whole society if no one will win the yearly event. Hilly, on the other hand, continues to deny to other people that the story in the book did not happen in Jackson, Mississippi, so that people will not figure out that she is the white lady who ate the Terrible Awful pie and her image in the society will not be ruined. After reading the book, I was not disappointed because most of the things that I am expecting to be in the book are included in the novel. The book made me cry, laugh and did not made me do my Physics homework for four days because I was interested what will happen next in the story. The book also mentions real life issues such as Jim Crow Law, Medgar Evers murder, and Martin Luther’s speech. The novel is a good book for storytelling for it does not only serve as entertainment for its reader, but also provides knowledge of what happened in the past. I wonder if this book will also be ban like To Kill a Mockingbird, because it shows discrimination among colored people in the past. In the end, I like everything about the novel because I have no difficulty in understanding the novel. Even though there is some difficulty with grammar in Aibileen and Minny’s section, the author used simple words, so that the readers can easily understand the story. Additionally, although the book has three narrators, which usually makes the reader to be confused, the stories are arranged in an organized manner, so that the events that are happening will not clash and will create a vivid picture to the readers. Furthermore, I like the way Aibileen helped Mae Mobley to gain self-confidence and teaching her that color or race does not matter in the society. I will never forget Aibileen saying to Mae Mobley that â€Å"You is kind, you is smart, you is important! † (521) Indeed, the book is an excellent book with a heart and would suggest for you to read it. Sincerely,

ceramics essays

ceramics essays Richard Fairbanks, although many times overlooked, was an important American ceramist. He was known as a "loner" and because of this he was never really appreciated for his talent. Fairbanks was greatly influence by his professors. Professor Paul Bonifas, who taught at the University of Washington, was one who left a huge impact on Fairbanks work. Fairbanks created a system of sketching pottery profiles, which stemmed from Bonifas teachings, as a mean of "thinking on paper." This approach to pottery through sketching was a crucial element that separated Fairbanks from many other Asian-inspired American peers. Although, Fairbanks was a wheel thrown expert, he continued to "think on paper" throughout his creative life. Much of what absorbs Fairbanks interests can be seen in his making of candlesticks, casseroles, and vases. During the later part of his life he created three of his final pieces. One being the Stoneware Heart Plate, 1985, secondly the Stoneware server, 1985, and thirdly the Stoneware Vase, 1985. These were three of Fairbanks last works, which suggest the direction in which he was headed, in terms of what defined his style, before he became deathly ill. The plate, which is an exploration of decoration, is liquid clay or "slip pattern" of concentric circles around a valentine heart. This plate was wheel thrown, and glazed with iron oxide and copper red washes. I find it very interesting because it seems to portray more emotion than most of his other pieces. This can probably be indirectly associated with Fairbanks illness and how he was feeling at the time. The next piece he made during his period of illness was called the "Stoneware Server." The server can be explained by "unadorned simplicity." It also takes on some style of the art deco period. Fairbanks decided that for the server, he would decorate a new style of handles. The thrown thread-spool shape. Many people explained this serv...

Evaluation for presentation to management Essay - 1

Evaluation for presentation to management - Essay Example The recent globalisation has changed the management of human resource in the organisations. There has been focus upon developing better organisational structure and hiring knowledgeable and experienced work force. The globalisation has removed the barriers in searching of talents within the corporate sector of a particular country (Jackson & Alvarez, 1992). The HR manager assists in developing the system of E-Recruitment through which there is every possibility of hiring knowledgeable and experienced personnel for MechCon. This also allows outsourcing certain activities and employees (Prude University, 2005). The globalisation has changed the needs of the organisation as well as the structure. The HR manager facilitates in developing the perfect organisational design and structure that best suit the Australian human resource policy and helps in increasing the efficiency of MechCon (Pucik, 1996). The public sector of Commonwealth of Australia administrates the policy of HRM. The company’s human resource policies should be in line with the Australian policy of HR practices (Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 2004). HR is known to assist in developing strategies that are aligned with the business. This is highly complex and a specialist HR manager with experience can develop such strategies along with business strategies to grow in the competing business environment. The complexity lies in the achievement of organisational excellence and growth (HRPS, 2011). It also lies in planning, development and acquisition of human resource in reaction to the demand for MechCon and dealing with strategy with industrial conflict. The HR manager in recent competitive advantage with application of knowledge successfully manages personnel, relationships, organisational capabilities and learning (Schuler & MacMillan, n.d.). This will help MechCon to gain competitive advantage not only in terms of employee
